Santana apple trees

Pick: Late-season    Flowering group: 4       Uses: Eat fresh    Disease-resistance: Good
Santana apple tree

Santana is high quality attractive modern red apple, developed specifically to have low levels of the natural compounds that can cause oral allergic reactions to apples in some people.

It is quite similar to Elstar, to which it is distantly related, with a good balanced flavour, and a slight floral quality.

Santana also incorporates natural resistance to scab, and we have heard reports of Santana trees showing no signs of infection even during the dreadful conditions of the spring of 2012, one of the wettest on record, when many normally resistant varieties were affected by scab.

For more information about the hypoallergenic properties of Santana see this article from the University of Wageningen.

Pollination guide for Santana

Santana is in flowering group 4. Santana is self-sterile and needs to be pollinated by another tree of a different variety nearby.

How to grow Santana apple trees

Santana is generally easy to grow, and has good resistance to scab and canker. It is considered susceptible to mildew but this may be more of an issue in a commercial orchard situation where many trees of the same variety are grown together, as we have not heard of it in a garden or mixed orchard situation.
