Is it best to buy a fruit tree from a northern nursery?

Question:

I have a sense that a tree grafted and nurtured in Yorkshire will do well in my West Yorkshire pennine garden! Is that correct?

Answer:

A tree raised in Yorkshire or a northern nursery will not necessarily be any better suited to your Yorkshire garden than one grown in Kent or in Scotland or in Belgium. The climate differences within the UK and north-western Europe in general are negligible.

The issue you are raising is far more relevant in the USA, where there are huge differences in winter hardiness zones.

The choice of variety is more important than the place of propagation in your case - make sure you choose a variety that can tolerate a fairly short growing season.
