White downy substance on apple tree shoots

Question

Asked by: Joanne  from Thetford, 06-Feb-2021

Hello I purchased my Egremont Russet tree from you last year. It was planted as soon as I received it and looked absolutely fine. However, I've noticed that it seems to have some powdery white substance on the majority of the branches. Can you help me identify what it is please and how I might treat?

Answer

We often get asked this. The downy-bloom you are referring to is found naturally on young shoots in the winter, especially in apple trees.  It shows the shoots are healthy and is nothing to worry about, and definitely doesn't need treating.
