Initial pruning and removal of buds

Question

Asked by: Lucy  from Beckenham, Kent, 10-Jan-2021

My 1-year bare-root maiden apple tree arrived this week and I have planted it. I've read the pruning instructions, and note that I need to prune the tree to 1m high. Please can I check though - the tree has buds all the way up the stem. Should I brush off the lower buds or leave them to develop ? Sorry if this a silly question!

Answer

It's a good question. The answer is do not brush off the lower buds, allow them to develop. Although in the longer term they will become redundant, in the short term they will help the tree to grow.
