Scrumptious is an excellent modern English early dessert apple, and has quickly established itself as one of the most successful garden apple varieties of recent times.

The flavour is what sets this apple apart from other early apple varieties, as the apples become genuinely sweet when planted in a sunny position. It's a great example of how growers are once again looking at flavour as the most important characteristic in a good apple. Scrumptious is also one of the most reliable early varieties, and the apples can be picked over a period of a couple of weeks rather than all at once.

If you are looking for a high-quality early-season apple which is productive and easy to grow, this is it!

Growing and Training

Scrumptious was developed specially for UK gardens by the English apple breeder Hugh Ermen. It is easy to grow and requires little if any routine pruning. It has a naturally weeping form, and the branches may benefit from support if the weight of apples looks too much for them.

Scrumptious is self-fertile apple variety, so no pollination partner is needed, and the blossom also has some resistance to frost.

To get the full red colour make sure you plant in a sunny aspect.

Scrumptious is has average disease-resistant, it is slightly susceptible to canker, but has good resistance to scab.

History

Scrumptious was developed in Kent in by Hugh Ermen and released in 1980. It is related to Golden Delicious and Discovery.
