Early Red, also known by its trade name Maraly, is an early-season red cherry. It should be ripe in late June / early July in southern England.

This is a commercial cherry variety that might be of interest to home orchard cherry enthusiasts. The trees are supplied in the commercial "knip" or "spindlebush" format.

How to grow

Early Red is susceptible to fruit splitting. This is caused by rain in June as the fruits are ripening. It is a serious problem for commercial growers, but perhaps not for the home orchard. It can be prevented by covering the tree to keep the rain off.

Early Red is not self-fertile and will need another compatible cherry tree nearby to pollinate it. Other American cherry varieties such as Pacific Red and Nimba are compatible, as are the Canadian self-fertile cherries.

History

Early Red, which is sometimes known as Early Garnet, is a cross between Garnet and Ruby cherries.
