All about Purple Fountain beech
Purple Fountain is a popular purple-leaved weeping beech, with steeply pendulous branches reach down to the ground. The main attraction is the rich dark purple leaves, which take on coppery-hues in the autumn.
Purple Fountain is also impressive in the winter, when its weeping shape is clear to see. The smooth silver-grey bark is also a feature.
Purple Fountain, like all Weeping Beeches, tends to be quite a bit smaller than the Common Beech, and is likely to reach 6m or so after 10 years, and perhaps 10m in the longer term. It also grows with a narrower and more upright habit. Both these characteristics make it a good choice as a specimen tree in a reasonably large garden.
Growing and Training
Purple Fountain will grow in most soils and situations, but avoid locations prone to flooding or waterlogging, and coastal sites.
History
Purple Fountain was discovered in the Netherlands in the 1960s and is a seedling of Purpurea Pendula, a purple -leaved weeping beech.

More about beech
Most of the beech trees we supply belong to the genus Fagus, of which the best-known is the Common Beech, Fagus sylvatica.
Beech trees grow steadily over the course of about 30 years, to become very large stately trees with grey bark, and a real presence in the landscape. A typical beech tree will be around 10m at 20 years old, and 20m-30m at 30 years old. Trees planted in woodlands are typically taller than those planted in the open.
Beech trees are deciduous, and produce both small flowers and catkins. Most go on to produce small beech nuts which are useful for wildlife, and can be edible.
Beech trees are easy to grow in almost any soil or situation, but they do not like waterlogged soils or salt spray. They do best in full sun or partial shade.
