All about Dalecarlica birch

This tall graceful tree is perhaps one of the most attractive of the silver birches.

Dalecarlia is named after the Swedish province of Dalarna where it was first discovered in the 18th century. For this reason it is also known as the Swedish Birch, and has become the national tree of Sweden.

Dalecarlica is also known as the cut-leaf birch - on account of the spiky shape of its leaves, which look as if they have been cut out with scissors.

Dalecarlica grows with an upright form, but the branches cascade downwards. The peeling papery bark is pure white, becoming fissued as the tree ages.
