All about Silver Birch birch

The graceful Silver Birch is a popular tree for specimen planting, with upright branches from which younger shoots spread down in a pendulous fashion.

The white peeling bark develops after a few years, and becomes more characterful as the tree ages.

In autumn the pretty diamond-shaped small green leaves turn yellow, while in winter the naked white branches are particularly attractive.

Growing and Training

The Silver Birch has excellent cold-hardiness and grows in most soils as long as they are not too alkaline.

It is easy to grow in most situations, but does best in full sun.

History

The Silver Birch is sometimes placed in the species Betula alba var. pendula.
