This is the Himalayan White Birch, named for its smooth white bark.

The leaves are dark-green, turning yellow in the autumn.

Growing and Training

The bark on young trees is initially light brown, this peels away to reveal the characteristic white or cream bark underneath as the tree matures.

History

More correctly known as Betula utilis var. jacquemontii, the jacquemontii form of the Himalayan birch species is native to the western reaches of the Himalayas, west of Nepal. Betula utilis seems to originate further east.
