All about Big Golden Star hawthorn

Big Golden Star is an attractive hawthorn, named for its golden autumnal foliage, and perhaps for its deeply lobed leaves which have a star-like shape.

Spring brings a mass of white blossom.

The red fruitlets are very large by hawthorn standards, up to 4cm diameter, and can be used for cooking, making this a useful tree for edible landscaping.

History

The hawthorn species Crataegus pinnatifida originates from north-eastern China, and are sometimes called Chinese Hawthorns.
