All about Worplesdon liquidambar
Worplesden is probably the most popular of the Sweet Gum or "Liquid Amber" trees. It is grown mainly for its pleasing conical appearance, and its very attractive autumnal foliage colours.
Growing and Training
Worplesden is a form of the Sweet Gum species Liquidambar styraciflua which originates from the the south eastern United States, and is often found near rivers, lakes and swamps - it likes most but well-drained soils. It is relatively fast growing, and likely to reach 6m-9m in UK conditions in the longer term.
For best autumn colours plant the tree in a sheltered spot in full sun. Worplesden gives a reliable autumnal display in UK conditions, but it is at its best in a good autumn when warm sunny days and cold nights bring out the leaf colours.
History
Worplesden resembles the popular North American maples, with its five-lobed leaves and spectactular autumn colours, but is not closely related to them.

More about liquidambar
Liquidambar trees are native to the eastern areas of North America, found particularly in low-lying areas near lakes or rivers or swamps.
They are grown primarily for their attractive forms, and especially for the bright autumnal leaf colours. Their lobed leaves and colourful foliage resemble those of Maples but their fruits are tiny spiky balls (known as gumballs"), whereas maples have winged seeds.
For best results in the UK plant in full sun in a sheltered location with well-drained soil, which may be neutral or slightly acidic. The strongest autumn colours are somewhat dependent on the weather - the ideal is a long spell of sunny days and clear cold nights.
