All about Autumn Blaze maple
Autumn Blaze is a superb hybrid maple, named for its stunning red and orange autumn leaf colours.
Autumn Blaze has a pleasing presence throughout the seasons. The deeply incised leaves are green over the summer, before turning in the autumn.
Growing and Training
Autumn Blaze is a rapid grower and should reach 4m in less than 10 years in reasonable conditions, continuing to grow for many decades.
Keep newly planted trees well-watered for the first few spring and summer growing seasons, but thereafter Autumn Blaze needs little or no attention.
The best autumn leaf colours occur in climates with warm autumn days and cold autumn nights - but Autumn Blaze is one of the more reliable maples for autumn colour in the UK climate.
History
'Autumn Blaze' was raised by Glenn Jeffers at the Seacrest Arboretum in Ohio, USA, and released in the 1970s. Its cultivar name is, appropriately, 'Jeffersred', but it is usually marketed as 'Autumn Blaze'.
It is a seedling of the hybrid species Acer x freemanii , which comes from crossing Acer rubrum (the Canadian maple) and Acer saccharinum (the Silver maple). 'Autumn Blaze' gets its rapid growth from the Silver maple, and its colours from the Canadian maple.
