All about Red Snakebark Maple maple

The Red Snakebark Maple is named partly for its distinctive bark, which features a very attactive striated effect, accented by white.

The young leaves have red tints, turning bright green over the summer and then orange and red in the autumn.

This species is smaller than many other maples, perhaps reaching beyond 6m after 10 years.

Growing and Training

Acer capillipes is relatively short-lived by maple standards, 50 years or so. It is easy to grow and tolerates most soils and situations, but is susceptible to honey fungus.

History

Acer capillipes is native to Japan, but has been grown in the UK since Victorian times when western collectors started to visit the Japanese islands. It is one of several different species which feature striated bark and are collectively known as snakebark maples.
