All about Esk Flamingo snake-bark maple maple

Esk Flamingo is a snake-bark maple, but its main feature is the distinctive red-white-green variegated leaves, which are particularly highly-coloured in spring, and are borne on bright red shoots.

Like most snake-bark maples the bare wood is also an attractive feature in winter.

Growing and Training

The key requirement for growing Esk Flamingo is a well-drained site. The tree may take a couple of years to get going, but should eventually reach a height of 4m or more in the best conditions. In average conditions it is likely to become an attractive large sprawling shrub.

History

This variety was previously known as Red Flamingo. The species Acer x conspicuum is a hybrid of Acer davidii and Acer pensylvanicum. Although a man-made combination, it seems these two species hybridise readily, often with valuable results.
