All about Scanlon maple

Scanlon is a particularly attractive form of the ever popular red maple - Acer rubrum.

It is a reliable selection for autumn colour in the UK, and is also one of the most upright columnar red maples, making it a good choice if space is limited. The colourful autumnal leaves remain on the tree well into November.

History

This maple was named by Edward Scanlon, a forestry graduate from the University of Michigan. It was propagated from an original tree at Bowhall Nursery, Cleveland, and patented in 1976. Its columnar form made it the ideal red maple for street planting.

Scanlon spent much of his early career (1946-1957) working for the city of Cleveland, Ohio. In his first meeting the Mayor asked him what he intended to do, and aware of how little was known about trees in urban situations, he replied "Well Mr Mayor, there is only one thing we know in this field, and that is the trees that shouldn't be planted - and all of them are on the streets of Cleveland." He went on to become a leading authority on trees for street planting.
