All about Nyssa sylvatica melliferous trees
The species Nyssa sylvatica is native to woodlands the eastern side of North America from Canada to Mexico, but was imported to Europe since the 18th century and is widely planted in parks. While generally upright in form, they often take on a slightly pendulous habit
Thesee are generally large trees - up to 25m in the USA and southern Europe, but only 5m-10m in the UK climate. They have with an impressive presence, especially in autumn when the leaves take on fiery red and yellow hues.
The small pale green flowers appear in clusters in June, and have little ornamental interest ... but they are highly attractive to bees, and rich in nectar. Bees nests are also sometimes found in decaying branches of older trees.
The fruits follow in early autumn, resembling small plums. They are not particularly palatable, but are attractive to birds.
