Frisia melliferous trees
£83.00Frisia is a form of the false acacia, Robinia pseudoacacia, named for its bright yellow leaves, which make it a colourful sight throughout the summer, turning to gold in the autumn. The leaves have an attractive pinnate form - each leaf is comprised of several individual leaflets, giving a frond-like appearance.
It will grow fairly quickly to a height of 6m or so.
Scented pea-like white flowers appear in early summer and are extremely popular with honey bees. The honey produced from this speecies (Robinia pseudoacacia) is often known as acacia-honey and is a very high quality.

Growing and Training
Like all Robinias, Frisia is easy to grow and will thrive in most conditions, including poor or chalky soils. It will also fix nitrogen into soil.
Its one weakness is it is susceptible to wind damage when young, so is best planted in a sheltered location.
Note that the seed pods of this tree are poisonous.
History
The species Robinia pseudoacacia originates from the eastern United States. It is also known as the false acacia on account of its dense hard rot-resistant wood.
If it is being grown as a regular tree Frisia only needs light or no pruning. However if it is being grown for its wood it responds very well to coppicing, and once established will grow back from the roots very quickly.
