Malling Elizabeth is a new plum variety, released to celebrate Queen Elizabeth's platinum jubilee.

The large plums have a light purple skin and juicy golden flesh, and a sweet flavour. They should be ripe at the start of the plum season in July

How to grow

Malling Elizabeth is a heavy-cropping variety. The plums are potentially larger than average, but you may need to thin the fruitlets in May for the best results.

It is a self-fertile variety, so you won't need another plum tree nearby to pollinate it.

Advice on fruit tree pollination.

History

Malling Elizabeth was developed at the famous East Malling Research Centre, and is a cross between two reliable plum varieties - Opal and Herman.
