Jefferson plum - fan training
Question:
Hello, I've just taken delivery of a maiden Jefferson plum from you. My plan is to fan train it and I have read your help page about this method. My question is when I should cut it down ready for the Y shaped growth. Most websites recommend late winter/spring. Can I do it now? I am worried the top part of the whip might get wind damaged against the fence I am leaning it towards. Many thanks.

Hi Angela
It is best to do that initial prune sooner rather than later, but make sure there are plenty of buds below where you cut. Wait until there is a spell of mild dry weather in the next few weeks.
All subsequent pruning of a fan-trained plum should be in early spring.
