All about Snowflakes amelanchier
Snowflakes is a popular Amelanchier, named for its large single white flowers, which do indeed resemble flakes of snow on an early spring day.
The new leaves are initially copper-coloured, but turn green over the summer and then take on attractive autumn tints.
The small blue/black fruits are edible but best left to the birds - Snow Flakes is grown primarily for its ornamental features.
Growing and Training
Snowflakes is a large shrub / small tree, and grows best in moist neutral or slightly acidic soils, with some shade. In good conditions it can reach up to 5m, with a spread of up to 4m.
It is easy to grow, but watch out for aphids in early spring and remove them promptly (by squashing or with a hose).
History
The species Amelanchier laevis is native to the eastern areas of North America.
