Rainbow Pillar® amelanchier

£75.00

Rainbow Pillar is named for its columnar appearance and the rainbow-like colours of the leaves in autumn. As well as the red, orange, and yellow hues often found in Amelanchiers in autumn, there will usually still be some green leaves remaining.

The spring blossom consists of relatively large pure white single flowers borne in upright clusters, which appear before the leaves.

Small black berries arrive later in the summer, and are edible or can be used in the kitchen - although other species of Amelanchier may be more productive.

Growing and Training

As the name suggests, Rainbow Pillar has a naturally upright form. It is less tree-like than some other Amelanchiers, and tends to grow with a dense branching bush-like habit.

It may become multi-stemmed in the longer term, and can be used for hedging.

Rainbow Pillar has good resistance to powdery mildew.

For best results, grow in full sun.

History

This Amelanchier was raised by Edward Losely of Losely Nursery in Ohio, USA and released in the 1990s. The cultivar name is 'Glenn Form', but it is marketed as 'Rainbow Pillar'.

It belongs to the species Amelanchier canadensis (the Canadian Snowy Mespilus).
