All about Cornishgold pear trees
Cornishgold was originally known as the Treburrow Pear, an old pear tree growing in a garden at Treburrow near Launceston in Cornwall. Pear trees are often long-lived and this one is thought to be about 300 years old. It was brought to the attention of the famous pomologist Dr Joan Morgan in 2015, who noted its unusual qualities, and subsequent DNA testing established that it was a unique variety of European pear. The Frank P Matthews nursery undertook to graft cuttings and re-named it as Cornishgold, reflecting its Cornish origins and golden colours.
This variety is historically interesting as it predates the wave of development of modern dessert pears in the 19th century, and comes from an era when pears were grown mainly for the kitchen. Although Cornishgold pears can be eaten fresh, this is primarily a variety for cooking, baking, and especially juicing.
Cornishgold pears ripen towards the end of September. They can be stored for a month or so in a fridge.
Growing and Training
It is perhaps not surprising that a tree which has survived several centuries of exposure to the challenging mild damp climate of Cornwall is a great choice for difficult climates throughout the UK, especially for gardeners in exposed situations. It also appears to tolerate poor acidic soils well.
Cornishgold has also been found to be reliably self-fertile.
Recommended pollinators for Cornishgold pear trees
